How can Audiology benefit from OtoSim?
2016 marked the first year we attended the world’s premier conference for audiologists, AudiologyNOW!, which was held in Phoenix, Arizona. We were fortunate to meet several audiologists, audiology educators and students who shared their view on the benefits of our otoscopy trainers.
Benefit #1: OtoSim 2™ allows audiology instructors to teach the conditions associated with hearing loss more efficiently.
Several educators advised us that advanced students are expected to identify a number of auditory canal obstructions linked to hearing loss. OtoSim 2’s extensive library contains nearly 400 images, including pathologies and obstructions like exostoses, cerumen impaction, acute otitis externa, and polyps.
Benefit #2: OtoSim 2™ allows instructors to verify the acquisition of audiology learning outcomes
As audiology is concerned with diagnosing and rehabilitating hearing loss, all programs include basic otology. Students are required to have knowledge of key landmarks of the ear and proper otoscopic technique. However, several educators mentioned that their current teaching methods don’t allow them to verify whether or not students were successfully identifying the required landmarks. The OtoSim 2 training and simulation platform enables instructors to confirm that their students have seen what they need to and learned the appropriate skills.
Benefit #3: OtoSim 2™ reduces the amount of teaching time required for audiology students to develop key clinical skills.
An interesting comment made by an instructor at the conference was that OtoSim 2 could be used to fulfil the audiology department’s alternative clinical encounter (ACE) hours. She believed the system could supplement clinical skills learning in her audiology program, thus reducing the amount of time required for the student to reach the desired level of competency. Other instructors shared this sentiment and immediately saw the OtoSim 2’s value for improving training efficiency.
OtoSim’s attendance at AudiologyNOW! provided an excellent opportunity to learn more about this essential healthcare field. Since the conference, several institutions have shown interest in our systems for audiology.
