Otology Workshop at the ENT for the PA-C CME Conference
It was our pleasure to assist with the Basic Otology Workshop at the annual ENT for the PA-C Conference in Orlando on March 31st.
The workshop was presented by Jeff Fichera, PA-C and president of the Society of Physician Assistants in Otorhinolaryngology /Head & Neck Surgery (SPAO-HNS).
Before the skills portion began, Mr. Fichera extended his gratitude for our participation stating, “As far as an educational tool, I find [OtoSim] fantastic. I just want to thank the OtoSim team for being with us today.”
Our otoscopy training and simulation systems allowed participants to brush up on their diagnostic skills and test their knowledge of various pathologies. With over 400 cases to choose from, there was something for everyone – from the progression of acute otitis media to the visible landmarks in acquired cholesteatoma. Some attendees were excited to see cerumen impaction or bullous myringitis, while others wanted to refresh their knowledge on the signs of herpes zoster, acute otitis externa or traumatic perforation. There was even an opportunity to practice pneumatic otoscopy, which is widely considered to be a valuable tool for making an accurate diagnosis.
The participants ranged from physician assistants and nurse practitioners that had been practicing for 20+ years, to new grads who had yet to see ear pathology. The event turned out to be beneficial for everyone involved regardless of their skill level, and everyone left feeling more confident and competent with their skills.
Some feedback from the otology workshop:
“Great pictures and computer software with landmarking function as well as description content.”
“(I liked) the large variety of slides ranging in difficulties. Additionally, the questions/answers with each slide ensures you are looking at the correct structures.”
“Combines hands-on learning skills with didactic teaching all in one.”
